Bacterial infection of dental pulp results in pulpal destruction and subsequently stimulates an inflammatory cell response and destruction of bone in the periapex. The relationship between bacterial infection of dental pulp and periapical lesions formation has been elegantly demonstrated in the classic studies of Kakehashi et al (1965).

Matrix metalloproteinase-8 and substance P levels in root canal exudates of nonvital teeth
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate levels of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) and substance P (SP) in root canal exudates during root canal treatment (RCT) of nonvital, painful teeth. Materials and Methods: Patients scheduled for nonsurgical RCT were prospectively selected; the study was performed after obtaining informed consent from the patients and was approved by the Ins...
متن کاملCorrelation between clinical symptoms and microorganisms isolated from root canals of teeth with periapical pathosis.
Periapical pathosis cases were classified and the effect of bacteria on clinical symptoms was examined. A positive correlation between bacterial growth and clinical symptoms was found. Peptococcus magnus and Bacteroides species were commonly found in clinically acute cases, while oral streptococci and enteric bacteria were frequently isolated from clinically asymptomatic cases. and Goodman (8) ...
متن کاملRadiologic assessment of quality of root canal fillings and periapical status in an Austrian subpopulation – An observational study
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Progress in endodontic techniques and methodological advances have altered root canal therapy over the last decades. These techniques and methods need periodical documentation. This observational study determined the current prevalence of endodontic treatments, and investigated the relationship of various factors with the periapical status in a Lower Austrian subpopulation....
متن کاملDiagnosis and management planning for rootfilled teeth with persisting or new apical pathosis
Teeth may require further management following root canal treatment because of persisting or new apical pathosis. Management must be based on the diagnosis of the presenting condition and the history of the previous treatment, particularly in relation to when it was completed. Most root-filled teeth with periapical pathosis should be re-treated in the first instance via a conventional orthograd...
متن کاملNonsurgical endodontic treatment of teeth associated with large periapical lesion using triple antibiotic paste and mineral trioxide aggregate apical plug: A case series
Periapical diseases are induced as a result of the direct or indirect involvement of oral bacteria. The etiologic factor being the degenerating pulp tissue. A periapical lesion is formed within an area of apical periodontitis which cannot form by itself and is inflammatory in origin. If the microbial etiology of periapical lesions and in the root canal is removed by nonsurgical root canal thera...
